Science - Geologist

To assign skills to your Geologist, select one of them from the star menu, and click on the "Open Skill Tree" button

From here, you're presented with the skill tree
You are required to fill in 5 books in any available slots before the next row will unlock. There are also level requirements as you go. The bottom 2 layers require Manuscripts, the middle 2 require Tomes, and the upper 3 Codex's.

Filling out the tree can be expensive, but if there's just something high up in the Codex level that you really want, but don't care much for the rest of the tree, it's worth keeping in mind that you do not need to put 5 books in each layer. If you *really* wanted Natures Gift at the very top, you could fill out your the entire Manuscript section (15 books), then most of the Tome section (15 books), and now that you have placed 30 books (and also level 50 for it to unlock), you can place your final book into the tree.
This isn't necessarily a good idea, but you should keep it in mind. If a layer isn't presenting you with skills that you actually want, you can save books by filling out the lower, cheaper layers.

The skills are mostly intuitive from holding your mouse over them. Some that aren't as meaningful

  • Quality Copper/Gold/Coal Mineshafts : A chance for the found deposit to have a halved production time, which will almost double the rate the ore is extracted.
  • Hidden Stone Stash: Chance to find a bonus 25 pinewood planks, 25 hardwood planks, 25 marble or 25 stone, which will be found in your mail.
  • Hidden Coal Stash: Chance to find a bonus 20 Exotic wood, 10 Granite, 5 Titanium or 50 Gold bars.
  • Copper Mining Surplus: Chance to find a bonus 50/80/100/250 Copper ore.
  • Gold/Iron Mining Surplus: Chance to find a bonus 30/50/80 of the respective Ore.

As a general tip, if you get the skills for Quality deposits, you can tell if the deposit has the double production before you go to build anything on it. Hold your mouse over the deposit icon (I find I need to hold the mouse over the deposit icon, move away, and then move the mouse icon back over the icon a second time), and it will tell you what skills have taken effect on the deposit. If it hasn't come back with what you want, start to build something else, like a well or a field, and then select to build the mine over the deposit. Quickly click on the building, and select to destroy it. If the building never made it to the first slot in your build queue, no resources were used up, and you now have the deposit gone and can send out the Geologist to try again.

Frequently Asked Questions from the Help channel when discussing the Geo Tree.
Q: The cost for new books has gone up, is it supposed to/does it keep going up forever?
A: The cost are intended to go up, this is normal, but they do cap out. See here for charts of the cost progression -> http://thradetso.blogspot.com.au/p/detailing-bookbinder.html

Q: If I find a "Quality Copper Mineshaft" (production time of 1 minute 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes), and place a "Endless Copper Mine" (infinite Copper, costs 20,000 gems from the shop) on it, will I have infinite copper produced at double speed?
A: Yes you will. Similarly a double speed Coal or Gold mine, if provided refills (no infinite mines for these deposits) could in theory last forever also. This wouldn't be considered worthwhile for Coal however.
